If you’re a “Pittsburger”, there’s probably a chance that you have had a Primanti sandwich once in your life.  If you’re not from around the area or have never had one before, you’re missing out.

As you arrive at one of the many Primanti restaurants located in Pittsburgh be sure to come hungry.  Primanti sandwiches are big, meaty and delicious.  Quick service allows you to enjoy your sandwich minutes after you sit down. As your sandwich arrives, grab it with two hands and take a big bite.  Once you bite into your sandwich your taste buds will erupt with flavor. primanti sandwich You will get the juicy taste of the meat and tomatoes, salty flavor of the French fries and finish it all off with the sweetness of the cole slaw.  This might seem like a lot of flavors to handle, but bite after bite it just keeps getting better.  If you’re an adventurous eater, Primantis offers many additional toppings that can go on your sandwich and make it even larger, including egg, cheese and hot sauce.   Come hungry and leave happy is what you’ll experience eating one of the many Primanti sandwiches.

City of Champions

When you ask someone what do they think of Pittsburgh, they will tell you the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates.  The perfect way to get a sense of what Pittsburgh is about, is to attend a sporting event.

Heinz FieldSteelers
:  What better way to spend a Steelers Sunday than at Heinz Field surrounded by crazy Steeler fans waving terrible towels.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are the only team in the NFL with six Superbowl rings.  The environment at Heinz Field is a sea full of black and yellow, loud, but yet enjoyable.  Steeler fans are loyal and will travel to any stadium.  No matter where you might be in the country, you will always find a Steelers fan.

Penguins:  It’s always a great day for hockey in Pittsburgh. Many NHL teams can say they have the best player in the league, but the Pittsburgh Penguins show year after year that they do have the best player.  Consol Energry Center is home of the Pittsburgh Penguins and home of the consecutive sellouts year after year.  Playoffs may not be held in the winter, but you sure can expect a white out from the crowd.  The Penguins’ organization ask fans to wear white attire to home games during playoffs and you better believe the fans do!

PNC PARKPirates: What better way to spend a summer night than at a basbeball game?  PNC Park was named best ballpark in America.  The view from the stadium is beautiful.  As the sun goes down, the skyline of the city lights ups.  PNC Park is home to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Even though the baseball team hasn’t been too good, the fans of Pittsburgh have always been loyal.  This past year, the Pirates were in the postseason for the first time in 21 years.  No matter win or lose, you can always count on Pirate fans at the game. Hey, there is even a pierogi race too!

So are you thinking about stepping out of the box and trying one of the famous Primanti sandwiches?  Let me know what you think, I’d love to hear.

  1. Your review on Primanti’s sums it up in a nutshell. I’ve had it a few times at Penquin’s and before Pirate’s games before. Definitely some of the best sandwiches in Pittsburgh. Szmidt’s and Fat Head’s have some really good food as well.

  2. Hey Heather,
I love this post and know that most people who aren’t locals find the concept of combining their side dish with their entrée completely bizarre. I myself have been to the original shop and loved the experience of the historical yet fun atmosphere. As much as I love the post and the sandwich shop itself, I was wondering if you had considered diving further into the family history of the Primanti’s and how they originally got their start. It’s an interesting story, and I hope you can take a look at it.

    • Thanks for your comment Hannah! I defiantly would dive further into the family history of Primanti’s. I think it would be a nice touch to add for those you aren’t from the Pittsburgh and have no idea what Primanti’s is. I will have to do some research and look into it! Thanks for your comment! 🙂

  3. Heather, I’ve never been to Pittsburgh, but I hear it is such an awesome city for young people like us! This post made me want to visit the city even more. I am such a foodie and drooled at the thought and site of one of those sandwiches from Primanti’s. What is the price range of the restaurant? Affordable?

As for the sports teams… I’m still a die-hard Cleveland Indians girl! Great post Heather!

    • Thanks for the comment Helen! When I have family or friends from out-of-town I always make sure to take them to Primantis! Price range varies, you could expect anything from $6-$12. During Penguins games you can get dollar pizza slices. Primantis is the perfect place to go for a quick, cheap bite! If you try it out, let me know what you think!

  4. I haven’t been to Pittsburgh in about two years, but I need to make a trip back soon! I’ve heard so many great things about Primanti’s, and I need to try it! It seems like a meal you can only eat so often, but I think I’m up for the challenge! You blog has so many fun ideas for things to do around the city. When I do finally plan a trip, I’ll be checking back to see what to do. Thanks for sharing!

    • I’m glad you enjoyed it Katie! I enjoy going to Primanti’s for sporting events with friends! The sandwich is very good, but like you said can only eat often! However, there are many other options to choose from! Pittsburgh is full of fun things, glad you liked my blog!
